Learn About Pharmacogenomics & Medication Safety
Your genes play a direct role in how your body processes medications. Enzymes encoded by specific genes — called pharmacogenes — metabolize drugs at different rates depending on the genetic variants you carry. This field of study is called pharmacogenomics, and it has real clinical consequences: the same dose of the same drug can work as expected for one person, cause side effects in another, and have no effect at all in a third.
If you have taken a consumer DNA test from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, or FamilyTreeDNA, your raw data file already contains many of the genetic variants that are relevant to drug metabolism. That raw data can be analyzed against clinical pharmacogenomics guidelines from organizations like CPIC to identify potential drug-gene interactions — without additional testing.
