Celiac & Gluten Screening
HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 genetic screening from consumer DNA data
Your genetics allow celiac disease, but do not confirm it
Carrying HLA-DQ2.5 means celiac disease is possible — but 25-40% of the general population carries DQ2 or DQ8, and only about 3% of carriers ever develop celiac. This result does NOT mean you have celiac disease. It means celiac cannot be ruled out by genetics alone.
HLA-DQ2.5
Carrier (1 copy)Genotype: GA
You carry one copy of the HLA-DQ2.5 haplotype. This is the primary genetic risk factor for celiac disease, present in approximately 90-95% of celiac patients. However, carrying DQ2.5 alone is not sufficient to cause celiac — most carriers never develop the condition.
HLA-DQ8
Not detectedGenotype: TT
You do not carry the HLA-DQ8 haplotype. DQ8 is the secondary genetic risk factor for celiac disease, found in approximately 5-10% of celiac patients who are DQ2-negative. Since you are already DQ2.5-positive, DQ8 status does not change your overall screening result.
What This Means
Celiac disease requires three things: genetic susceptibility (which you have), gluten exposure, and an autoimmune trigger. Genetics alone cannot diagnose celiac — they can only rule it out. If you did NOT carry DQ2 or DQ8, celiac would be essentially excluded (>99% negative predictive value). Because you DO carry DQ2.5, further evaluation is warranted only if you have symptoms or risk factors.

Recommended Next Steps
If you have GI symptoms (bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss) or a family history of celiac disease, request a TTG-IgA blood test from your doctor. Do NOT start a gluten-free diet before testing — removing gluten can cause false-negative results on both blood tests and biopsy.

Clinical HLA-DQ Typing Costs $100–300
The Celiac & Gluten Screening is $19 using raw data from 23andMe or AncestryDNA. No new sample, no lab visit. Your consumer DNA file already contains the HLA-DQ variants needed for celiac genetic screening.
Based on HLA-DQ Research with >99% Negative Predictive Value
If you do not carry HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8, celiac disease is essentially excluded. This negative predictive value exceeds 99% and is one of the strongest genetic exclusion tests in medicine.
